Abstract
Esports (‘electronic sports’ or ‘competitive video games’) have rapidly evolved into a new form of recreational activity. It has steadily gained recognition as an economically significant market worldwide. Due to its rapid economic growth, the esports society now faces integrity issues, much like those seen in traditional sports, including doping, match-fixing, and corruption. Therefore, the esports society must take immediate and comprehensive measures to address these urgent issues to maintain the “integrity of esports”. Given this context, this article will primarily explore the following inquiry: What role should national esports federations play in addressing integrity issues in esports? To address this core question, the article will address the following research questions: (1) What are integrity issues in esports?; and (2) How has the esports society historically managed these integrity issues? This consideration will serve to elucidate the pivotal role of national esports federations in addressing integrity issues in esports.
