Abstract
The University of Oregon held an international conference on The Promise of Reason to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the influential book The New Rhetoric by Chaim Perelman and Lucie Olbrechts-Tyteca. In this plenary session held on May 19, 2008, Jeanne Fahnestock (University of Maryland) gives a paper entitled “No Neutral Choices: The Art of Style in The New Rhetoric,” and Francis J. Mootz III (Pennsylvania State University Dickinson School of Law) speaks on “Perelman’s Theory of Argumentation and Natural Law.” Introductions are by David Zarefsky (Northwestern University).
